Just by the report cards, he’s been going up from....he was usually getting Ds and a few Fs here and there.  Now he’s getting Cs and Bs, some Bs.  But I know this program is helping out a lot.

Who We Are

The 21st CCLC centers are a result of The No Child left Behind Act of 2001 as our centers offer academic, artistic, and cultural enrichment opportunities to students and their families when school is not in session. The primary goal of the 21st CCLC program is to supplement the education of children who attend low performing schools and live in high-poverty areas with academic, artistic and cultural enrichment during out-of-school time hours, so that they may attain the skills necessary to meet state core curriculum content standards. In addition, the centers must offer literacy and other educational services to families of the participation students. Read more>>

Our Mission

The Cumberland Empowerment Zone Corporation is committed to working with Cumberland County school districts, parents and youth to provide quality enrichment after-school and summer programs that enhance students' education beyond traditional school hours and encourage them to achieve lifelong success. The 21st CCLC program will collaborate with local partners and agencies to provide a diverse selection of activities to participating youth and families, including art and culture, recreation, literacy, educational support and other assistance services.

10 More Reasons Why...

After-School and Summer Programs Make Successful Students

  1. About one-third of 8th graders, one-fourth of 10th graders, and one-fifth of 12th graders watched four or more hours of television on weekdays in 2000. Researchers have associated watching violence on TV with an increased likelihood of physically aggressive behaviors, relational aggression (behaviors that can
harm relationships with others) and negative assumptions in children’s and teens interactions with others.
  2. More than half of teens say they would not watch so much TV or play video games if they had other things to do after school. Fifty-two percent of teens say they wish there were more community and neighborhood based after-school activities.
  3. Young people with nothing to do during out-of-school hours miss valuable chances for growth and development. They can resort to activities that negatively influence their development and futures.
  4. After-school programs can provide middle school students with opportunities to meet needs that schools
often can’t provide, like personal adult attention, a positive peer group, and activities that hold their interest and build self-esteem.
  5. After-school programs can help young people realize they have something to contribute to groups by working with diverse peers and adults to create projects, performances and presentations that receive
praise from their families and the larger community. They can develop a vision of life’s possibilities that,
with commitment and persistence, is truly attainable. Read more>>
